Port Royal
Though many faceted, the jewel in the crown of Port Royal is the Port Royal Club. It just would not be Port Royal without the Port Royal Club. The Port Royal Club offers a private membership to Port Royal property owners, and that membership opens members to a full offering of meal services throughout the day, specialty events, various dining areas overlooking the beach, a large beachfront pool, poolside dining, extensive fitness and tennis facilities, and pristinely manicured beachfront with Club services on the beach plus a set of additional comprehensive Club services. Without equal or alternative … Port Royal is authentically the finest navigable waterfront enclave within Florida.
Truly a visionary, and to be sure John Glen Sample’s efforts show him to have been exactly that, he could not have known his decision in the late 1940’s to end his career in advertising by selling his ownership interest in the Chicago based advertising firm of Blackett-Sample-Hummert would create a legacy neighborhood known and recognized at the highest levels among blue chip real estate owners and aficionados around the world.
He sought to create an extraordinary residential community … what he achieved has evolved well beyond that benchmark. Mr. Sample began acquiring land in southern Naples after a vacation here with his wife in the winter of 1938 once he had already purchased some land on the beach where their first home was constructed.
Various historical accounts indicate that from 1938 to 1950 John Glen Sample completed a series of land parcel purchases and after those acquisitions he aggregated them into the land now known as Port Royal.
Though difficult to ascertain to a certainty, his total cost to acquire all the land is believed to have been approximately $60,000.00 followed by land development costs. Different records indicate land development costs were in the vicinity of $3,000,000 to $3,500,000 to complete the construction of all land development including roads and infrastructure.
In 1959 the cost to construct the Port Royal Club alone was nearly $1,000,000 … and this was completed nearly 10 years after the very first lots sold in the Cutlass Cove section of Port Royal between prices ranging from $7,500 to $12,000 per homesite.

The man who conceived Port Royal was an innovator, dream maker, a developer, a salesman, a realist with tough cladding, a vital thinker, and a veteran of both the Army and the Navy in World Wars I and II, respectively. John Glen Sample’s dream for an unrivaled waterfront realm to bring together people of all ages with a beachfront club for their exclusive use has been realized, and the story he wanted it to tell continues to be written to this very day.
With approximately 550 homesites offering an incredible ensemble of water views and orientations to the coastline, there is one truly unmatched and unrivaled neighborhood in Naples and more broadly the State of Florida … and that neighborhood is internationally recognized as Port Royal.
